When I joined Fluence, their Mosaic product had undergone several rounds of new feature development without a designer, and for a highly technical product like a BESS management dashboard, the UX was understandably a mess. To deal with this, I lead my team in conducting an exhaustive design audit, which uncovered a lot of inconsistencies in the software between specific energy markets (ERCOT, NEM, and CAISO in this case). The gaps and overlaps identified in the audit helped us create a design system which cut front end engineer time for new features by 1/3. This was critical to development as market rules in the energy sector are always changing and new, very needed, updates were blocked by a need to design each inclusion from scratch.
